The Monthly Selection

2007 Willamette Valley “Estate” Pinot Noir

Winery Comments: “We are excited to release our 2007 Witness Tree “Estate” Pinot Noir – the wine that is really a “snapshot” of our entire vineyard – which ultimately reflects the blending of the flavors and textures produced by the varying soil types, vine ages, clonal selections and sun-exposures from our 52-acre vineyard. The wine itself is packed with succulent, forward black fruits, with just the slightest hint of vanilla and spice. The 2007 season provided us with graceful and spirited Pinot Noir – the kind of beautiful wine that originally put Oregon on the world map of premier Pinot producers in the 1980's.” Journalist impressions: “The Witness Tree pinot leans toward dark fruit flavors on the palate – think black plums perhaps – attractively spiced and with a bit of tannin when initially opened.” “A garnet, translucent red in the glass, the Witness Tree Vineyard 2007 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley (13.6%) offered scents of cherry with notes of dusty menthol following. The cherry fruit flavors predominated on the palate, with balanced acidity and a long finish. There was a bit of wood on this wine, with spice and toast being present. We enjoyed how the Witness Tree complemented our spicy chicken and brought the rest of the meal to live with its bright acidity.”

The Witness Tree Vineyard Story

Witness Tree Vineyard is owned by Dennis & Carolyn Devine. Witness Tree is located in the Eola Hills, northwest of Salem, an area recognized as one of Oregon's premier growing regions. Named for an ancient oak which towers over the vineyard – which was designated a surveyor's landmark in 1854 – Witness Tree is dedicated to the production of exemplary, estate-bottled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as Viognier, Pinot Blanc, and Dolcetto.

As the Winery states, “Most importantly, we are 100% estate bottled. Every grape that goes into a Witness Tree wine has been grown on our property. This gives us complete control (at least as much as Mother Nature allows), over the quality of the fruit that comes into the winery to be made into wine. Not many Oregon wineries have this ability.

Also, our vineyard site is exceptional and lies within a tremendously beneficial microclimate. We benefit from a southeasterly exposure, which allows the site to warm earlier in the day. Add to that a protective ridgeline to our west and you have a combination of climate elements that facilitates earlier ripening of our fruit than is found in many other vineyards. This is a major factor in the quality of our wines. The vineyard takes its name from an ancient oak tree used as a surveyor's landmark in 1854, during the Oregon Trail era. The tree was used to mark the Northwest corner of the original Donation Land Claim No. 51 and still stands today in our vineyard.”

“Steven Westby is our Winemaker and Vineyard Manager. Working the vineyard here at Witness Tree for the last eleven vintages has given Steven an intimate knowledge and appreciation for the varied microclimates in our vineyard. His familiarity with the nuances of each separate lot of fruit grown here on the estate qualifies him as one of Oregon’s most capable Winemakers.”
