The Monthly Selection

2007 Bodegas Borsao “Tres Picos Garnacha”

Winemaker Comments: 100% Grenache. Deep and sweet, Tres Picos Borsao is cherry-red in color with a hint of purple tones. In the nose, there is a boundless bouquet of mature red fruits with traces of flowers that are typical of the best Garnachas. In the mouth, it is rich and well-structured simultaneously conveying flavors of blackberries, strawberries and tones of leather, vanilla and plums. Perfectly combined with sweet and pleasant tannins, Tres Picos Borsao leaves us with a long, silky and balanced finish. The grapes come from vines that are between 35 and 40 years old, which are located on uneven terrain at an altitude of 600 to 700 metres.

"The 2007 Tres Picos Garnacha is a worthy successor to previous vintages of this always remarkable value. Sourced from low yielding vineyards on the slopes of Moncayo Mountain, the wine was aged half in stainless steel and half in French oak for 10 months. Purple-colored, it offers up sexy aromas of cedar, underbrush, mineral, and black cherry. This leads to a layered, intense, spicy, rich Garnacha with gobs of succulent fruit, excellent balance, and a plush finish. This may well be the finest Tres Picos to date. It is likely to improve in the bottle for 2-3 years but there is no reason to delay your gratification." – Wine Advocate

The Borsao Story

The world’s most influential wine critic, Robert Parker, has twice named JORGE ORDONEZ Wine Personality of the Year, and called him one of the most influential wine personalities of the past twenty years. This is because of Ordonez’ commitment to finding the finest small bodegas in Spain, helping them to perfect their wines, and introducing them here in the U.S., often to rave reviews.

Much of the following information about Ordonez is drawn from his interview with New Beverage Publication, Inc. in Chicago, which describes Ordonez as a tireless promoter of his native Spanish wines, and who has gone from a lone voice in the wine-wilderness to the leading importer of fine, Spanish wines into the U.S. His long-standing family ties with many of the wines he represents, plus a personal passion that borders upon a psycho-logical disorder, have served him well, and you will not find a better collection of premium Spanish wines under one portfolio. As one wine merchant who knows him well, explained, “Jorge Ordoñez often has amazingly good wines at very attractive prices. Some of the wines in his portfolio have garnered absurdly high numerical scores from various critics. Yet we find that some of his "little," lesser known wines are of very fine quality, too. They simply cost less.”

He draws from an astonishing portfolio – 130 wines from 40 different wineries. More than a decade after the death of Franco in 1975, Spanish wine, once proud, had fallen to a regrettable state. However, the country's vineyards were like secret gardens, overflowing with old vines that could make superb wines, if only someone would care for them, separate the good from the bad, and not mix the grapes with indifferent ones to make mediocre wine. Who would awaken the sleeping giant? Jorge Ordonez. Through the force of his personality and his practically limitless energy, Ordonez, just 45, has changed the Spanish wine world, and especially the American view of Spanish wines.

Bodegas Borsao, our feature this month, is described by Robert Parker as "one of the world's greatest value-priced wineries". Bodegas Borsao was established in 1958, and is located 60 killometres north-west of Zaragoza, in the former “Kingdom of Aragon.” The vineyards, which lie between Mount Moncayo and the River Ebro at 420 metres above sea level cover a total of area of 2000 hectares, grown principally to Garnacha (Grenache), Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mazuelo and Macabeo.

The combination of calcareous and stony soils, a continental climate, an average annual rainfall of about 400 litres and modern, well-equipped installations with over 600 American oak casks, all contribute to producing excellent quality wines.
