Kim Crawford Winery
– Marlborough, New Zealand

No wine-producing region in the world has experienced such explosive growth, both in production and quality, as New Zealand has in the past twenty years. Splendid, unblemished isolation from the rest of the world – climatically, environmentally, and culturally! “We do things unconventionally. We take risks, start things, welcome difference.”

The Monthly Selections

2008 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

This is Kim Crawford’s flagship – Rated 91 Points Or Above For Seven consecutive Years and “Top 100 Wines”Wine Spectator!! Astounding quality at ½ the price of comparably great French Sauvignon Blanc!! Winemaker Comments: Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand is widely regarded as setting a global standard for this variety. A combination of dry and moderate climates gives near perfect cool climate growing conditions and assists with the intense varietal characters unique to Marlborough. Ours is a crisp an powerful, a well balanced wine with intense aromas of gooseberry, passion fruit and citrus flavours – lifted aromatics of tropical fruits combined with the traditional nettle and herbaceous aromas of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Firm acidity is surrounded by tropical fruits and herbaceous notes with hints of citrus sneaking in. A whopping mouthful!

2008 “Un-Oaked” Chardonnay

Winemaker Comments: If you like you Chardonnay with true expression of fruit then this is the one to love! This wine does not hide behind any oak. It’s a crisp wine that tastes of the succulence and freshness of the grape – white peach, grapefruit and melon with a hint of pineapple flavours are supported by a soft and creamy-textured mouthfeel (achieved through malolactic fermentation). It may have no oak, but this wine has an abundance of character; a fruit-forward nose showing rich pineapple, white stonefruit, and melon characteristics. On the palate, a soft, full length palate of intense pineapple and tropical fruits.

2008 Marlborough Pinot Noir

Winemaker Comments: New Zealand is now acknowledged as one of the few countries in winedom to have successfully come to grips with this fickle, but supremely aristocratic grape variety. A combination of dry and moderate climates gives near perfect cool climate growing conditions and assists with the intense varietal characters in Marlborough grapes. This wine puts the “NOIR” into Pinot Noir; a fine combination of dark cherries and red fruit abound. This is a fruit-focused and velvety wine with rich flavours and soft tannins. Bright red with purple and crimson notes, an enticingly aromatic wine showing notes of dark cherries and strawberries with the alluring complexity of well integrated oak, vibrant, fresh fruit flavours underpinned by nuances of sweet, smoky oak. Good firm tannins give the wine length and weight. You can savour the wine long after it has left your palate.

The Kim Crawford Story

No wine-producing region in the world has experienced such explosive growth, both in production and quality, as New Zealand has in the past twenty years. Located more than 1000 miles southeast of Australia, New Zealand has existed in splendid, unblemished isolation from the rest of the world – climatically, environmentally, and culturally. Many of the species of flora and fauna here are unique to this clean, green land of stunning contrasts ranging from active volcanoes and subtropical foliage to jagged, snow-covered peaks. It is truly a magical place whose people are firmly devoted to maintaining the magnificent natural environment they are blessed to enjoy. Some of this emphasis on natural quality and purity finds expression in the increasingly sought-after wines of New Zealand.

While wine has been produced in New Zealand for well over a century, it has only been recently that improved clonal selection and winemaking techniques have enabled New Zealand wines to vault to the forefront of world critical opinion. While Sauvignon Blanc among whites and Pinot Noir among red varieties attracted the greatest initial critical acclaim, knowledgeable wine lovers are rapidly discovering the pleasures of New Zealand Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and other white wines, and among the reds, many Bordeaux-styled blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, with early but exciting possibilities with Syrah starting to appear as well.

The epicenter of New Zealand’s stunning wine ascendancy is in the Marlborough Valley on the South Island, and it is the remarkable, truly world-class Sauvignon Blancs produced here that put New Zealand on the map. Strange as it sounds, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – racy and refined beyond all peers – is now the global benchmark for this varietal, equaling and usually surpassing the most prestigious wines of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume in the Loire Valley of France – not to mention the rest of the wine world. Soon, equally superlative Marlborough Pinot Noirs began to emerge as well.

Kim Crawford Wines is a now an established star of this New Zealand emergence. The winery started out in a small Auckland cottage in New Zealand. Since launch in 1996, the label has gained critical acclaim around the globe. As the winery states, “Being big was never our aim. Being the best has been. We do things unconventionally. We take risks, start things, welcome difference. It has now been established that screw caps keep wine fresher than corks, so we started championing them. We decided the world needed a clean, top quality, fruit-driven Chardonnay devoid of the heavy oak, so we started making one. Indeed, when we first started Kim Crawford, we didn't even have a vineyard or winery – just an idea and a lot of energy.
